Women’s League Round-Up
Cushinstown made it a week to remember when they caused a major upset in the Division Three Cup final, coming from behind to beat favourites Shelburne. After winning the Gaynor Cup last Sunday, Cushinstown went into this game full of confidence but still rated underdogs against a Shelburne side who had only lost one league game all season. After a very nervous first half which produced no goals, the game opened up in the second half when Shelburne took the lead courtesy of an inswinging corner from Chloe Byrne found it’s way to the back of the net. Cushinstown did not allow this to deter them and they went in search of an equaliser and were rewarded when Joanne Dillon scored to bring the sides level. Shelburne had their opportunity to go back in front when awarded a penalty but Cushinstown’s keeper Anna Power pulled off a magnificent save to keep the sides level. With only minutes to go and extra time looking a distinct possibility, Joanne Dillon struck again to put Cushinstown in front and despite Shelburne attacking in numbers, they did enough to hang on for their second trophy in eight days. Last Sunday was the first cup the club had won in the Women’s league so it is a remarkable achievement for their second one to arrive so quickly. Anna Power was awarded a well deserved player of the match award as League Secretary Martin Cahill presented the trophy to a delighted Cushinstown squad. The league would like to take this opportunity to thank New Ross Celtic for the use of their facilities on the day
